 Extremism and Violent Extremism in Cardiff/Wales/UK

A Raising-Awareness Workshop for Education Welfare Officers 

Friday 27th April 2012: Howardian Centre, 10.00am 3.30pm

(Registration from 9.30 a.m.)

 

Overall Aim:

 

To equip Education Welfare Officers with a ‘toolkit’ of knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their job function - specifically in respect of safeguarding and wellbeing and their relationship to Prevent. 

Objectives:

 

1.   To determine the constituents of the problem: What is extremism?

      Introduction by Barrie Phillips and screening of Challenging Extremism DVD

 

2.   To determine the extent of the problem in Cardiff – a recent historical perspective.

i)          Are we a tolerant or intolerant society? Barrie Phillips

ii)         Context of extremism in Cardiff – Officer Mike Rees

 

3.   To outline systems and processes for dealing with the problem, specifically: 

           

(i)        Prevent process in Cardiff – Robina Samuddin

(ii)       Channel process in Cardiff – Officer Mike Rees

 

4.   To determine the ‘triggers’ for extremism: How do we identify an extremist? –  Mike Rees/Robina Samuddin

 

5.   Workshop  Through case studies, to identify vulnerability and examine the referral process in the event of safeguarding and wellbeing concerns:

 

      [Two cases to be reviewed by the EWOs; one from the Far Right and the other from the Al-Qaeda perspectives]

 

6.    To review the interface between the Prevent agenda and current Education Welfare Officer functions.

      [This session will tie in the learning from the day. Particular emphasis will be on the process that the EWOs should follow in relation to vulnerable or radicalised individuals. They will leave the session with a clear understanding   of how Prevent fits into their current safeguarding procedure]
